Does Dark Roast Have More Caffeine? (Myth Busting)

4 min read

One of the most common things people say about coffee is: "Dark roast has more caffeine."

It sounds reasonable. Dark roast tastes stronger, more bitter, and more intense - so it must have more caffeine.

In reality, the relationship between roast level and caffeine is much more subtle.

What roasting actually changes

As coffee roasts, the beans lose moisture and become less dense. They also expand in size.

The roasting process changes flavor dramatically, but caffeine is relatively stable under roasting temperatures. Most of it remains in the bean regardless of how light or dark the roast is.

That means roast level affects flavor far more than caffeine content.

Weight vs volume

Some of the confusion comes from how coffee is measured.

If you measure coffee by weight, the caffeine content is nearly the same between light and dark roasts.

If you measure by volume (for example, scoops), dark roast beans are larger and less dense. A scoop of dark roast contains slightly less coffee mass, and therefore slightly less caffeine.

In practice, the difference is small, but it can vary depending on how the coffee is prepared.

What actually affects caffeine

Caffeine levels are influenced more by:

  • the coffee variety (Arabica vs Robusta)
  • the amount of coffee used
  • the brewing method

These factors tend to have a much greater impact than roast level.

One common myth

Many people assume espresso has more caffeine than regular coffee. In reality, espresso is more concentrated, but it is served in a much smaller amount. A single shot typically contains less total caffeine than a full cup of drip coffee.

Dark roast may taste stronger, but that comes from flavor, not caffeine.

In practice, the difference in caffeine between roast levels is small. What matters more is how much coffee you use and how you brew it.

When choosing a roast, it's best to focus on flavor preference, not caffeine levels.

Light, medium, and dark roasts each offer a different experience in the cup.
